After a career with the New York State Department of Education as its director of staff development for New York City, Renee L. retired and headed south.

“I ran to Florida like I saw everyone else do, even though I had never been there before except for a trip to Key West,” Renee explained. “But I could not tolerate the weather. Even in the wintertime, the humidity was too much.”

Renee L. became a resident at The Knolls in March 2018.

Even though she had a beautiful home and had made many friends down south, Renee decided that she needed a more comfortable environment – closer to Scarsdale where she called home, and somewhere she could experience the four seasons in the way only Westchester can offer. Renee also decided that she wanted security, and a place to live “not for today, but for tomorrow.”

Why Renee chose The Knolls

With her children now living all over the world in places like Israel, Switzerland and Maine, Renee wanted to make a home where she could have help if she needed it. Renee had remembered visiting The Knolls when she would come to see her friends who live there, and attending a few of the events that The Knolls hosts regularly.

Knowing the positive experience her friends have had at The Knolls and getting a feel for how the community would serve her current and future needs, she decided to move into an apartment at The Knolls in March 2018.

Armed with a discerning taste, Renee decorated her apartment and made it her own comfortable space. She says that getting settled into her new space – like with any move – was the biggest adjustment, but adding those personal touches has helped her feel at home.  She took advantage of some of the move-in assistance offered by Maureen and the team at The Knolls, while also contracting a moving crew for help with arranging her furniture and hanging pictures.

“I was comfortable rather quickly,” Renee noted. “In two days I was unpacked.”

With her home now cozy, she can enjoy the amenities and the invigorating experience of active senior living at The Knolls.

“The surroundings here are beautiful. From my window, I see green trees and the lovely campus,” Renee said. “The new dining room is attractive, and accommodating in a lovely way. And the service people are exceptional throughout.”

Thriving each day at The Knolls

Socially, Renee enjoys playing mah-jongg with the new friends she’s made at The Knolls and visiting her longtime friends who have lived here since before she arrived. She also regularly relaxes and exercises in the heated, indoor pool. For off-campus ventures, Renee likes how the ideal location of The Knolls makes it easy to visit NYC and the surrounding Westchester County communities.

As for anyone considering a move to The Knolls, Renee offered the following advice: “Make a list of things that are important. As you visit, check those things off as you go. I think you really need to come with a mindset of what you’re looking for when making such a big decision.”

For Renee, the amenities and reassurance that The Knolls provides, with its blend of country comfort and city convenience, made her “big decision” an easy one. Now, Renee is at home at The Knolls, with more peace of mind, and enjoying a well-balanced Westchester lifestyle.
